The L2 Windows and VMware Administrator provides intermediate-to-advanced level support for a company's Windows Server and VMware virtual environment. The role involves troubleshooting complex system issues, applying security patches and updates.
- Typically requires L2 & Above with 6–10 years of experience in a similar administrator or IT support role.
- Relevant certifications, such as VMware Certified Professional (VCP) and/or Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate (or equivalent legacy MCSA/MCSE) are preferred.
Key responsibilities
Windows server administration
- Manage, maintain, and troubleshoot Windows-based servers (e.g., Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022).
- Administer and troubleshoot Active Directory (AD), including user accounts, group policies (GPOs), DNS, and DHCP.
- Perform system updates, patches, and configurations, potentially using tools like WSUS or SCCM.
- Manage and maintain various server roles and services, such as IIS web servers, file servers, and print servers.
- Handle performance tuning and optimization for Windows operating systems.
- Handling daily BAU activity which includes, incident, changes, problems, RCA etc.
VMware virtualization
- Install, configure, and maintain VMware environments, including ESXi hosts, vCenter servers, and vSphere.
- Administer virtual machines (VMs), including creation, cloning, templating, and migration (vMotion).
- Monitor and manage system performance within the virtual environment and troubleshoot issues related to hosts, VMs, and networking components.
- Maintain awareness of VMware software patches and their effect on the server environment, and apply updates using tools like VMware Update Manager (VUM) & LCM
- Perform physical-to-virtual (P2V) migrations as needed.
- Handling daily BAU activity which includes, incident, changes, problems, RCA etc.
Troubleshooting and support
- Provide 24/7 on-call support for critical production issues on a rotation basis.
- Collaborate with other IT teams (e.g., networking, storage) and vendors to resolve complex issues and integrate solutions.
- Perform root cause analysis (RCA) to identify and prevent recurring problems.
Security and maintenance
- Administer access controls for user accounts and groups within both Windows and VMware systems.
- Maintain detailed technical documentation, standard operating procedures, and configuration details for systems.
- Use scripting and automation tools, such as PowerShell or PowerCLI, to streamline routine administrative tasks.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
